When referring to the Paris Commune, we refer to them as communist revolutionaries. But as a few of you helpfully pointed out, this is an oversimplification. The commune was actually made up of a number of different radical groups who were collectively called the Communards, as well as some National Guardsmen who refused to stand down and joined the commune. The communards consisted of radical republicans, socialists, and anarchists. The main figures of the movement had no links to traditional Marxism. Another small correction is that Belgium's territory should not include Eupen-Malmedy as shown in our continental map of Europe. Sign up for Armchair History TV today! From the outset his comments are incorrect. Napoleon Did Attack the (German) Holy Roman Empire, His army was larger (LARGER) than those of Lothringen (Lorraine) and Elsass (Alsace) and then the rest of the German States fell away and negotiated a peace. Austria (a Duchy) at the time was still fighting the Ottoman Turks in the Balkans with Hungary. I could only send a token Army to join the Russians. By the time the Franco/Prussian war began, only those states near France still used the French made Needle gun, by 1868 the Mauser 1861 was in use, a bolt action, equal to or superior to the French one. The Prussians routed the French under Napoleon and then the Third Republic, then laid siege to Paris with rail Guns

It's ironic that pretty much all the reasons why the Prussians won are the same reasons why Napoleon I won his many campaigns and wars: mass conscription and mobilisaton; highly trained and professional officer corps; total meritocracy in promotion; encouraging initiative in commanders; superior usage of massed artillery; rapid (forced) marches to outpace the enemy; accurate and detailed maps; massive pincer maneuvers, etc. The Prussians of the 1860s/70s were the true spiritual heirs to Napoleon I's military legacy, not his ill-fated nephew.
