The W124 Mercedes 500E was the world's most perfect sedan | Revelations with Jason Cammisa | Ep. 05

Bílar og ökutæki

There are a lot of misconceptions about the Porsche-built W124 Mercedes 500E, and Jason explains why the 500E and E500 was NOT a Porsche sports sedan with a Mercedes badge. First off, there's not a single Porsche part on the car.
Porsche Engineering Services helped with reengineering the W124's engine compartment to fit in the 32-valve, 4-cam M119 V-8 - for both the 400E and the 500E.
But the 500E doesn't use the same V-8 as the 500SL. It needed shorter connecting rods so that it fit in the same physical space as the 4.2-liter 400E - this way only one structural variant needed to be produced.
The 400E was a response to the Lexus LS400. Why do you think it wasn't called a 420E?
Porsche also did the engineering to bolt up wheels, tires, brakes, and suspension components from the wider and heavier R129 500SL and W124 500SEL. That necessitated fender flares so wide that the 500E didn't fit down the regular W124 production line in Sindelfingen.
For both models, Porsche performed the physical modifications to Mercedes-built W124 chassis, and sent them back to Sindelfingen for paint. The 400E remained there, but because of its width, the 500E was sent back to Porsche, which assembled the 500E at a second Zuffenhausen factory.
With Bruno Sacco's revolutionary looks, aerodynamics, obsession with safety, and Mercedes build quality and engineering might, the W124 was certainly among the best (and most expensive) sedans in the world.
Still is. It's close to perfect. But it's not a Porsche Sports Sedan.

Well you say "500E over cornered M cars" dear Jason, I watched Keiichi Tsuchiya (a.k.a DK) killed 500E with a 3.8 E34 M5 on the track. I agree W124 is a legendary car which 500E is even more legendary but E34 M5 is a better "sports car".

I worked at a Mercedes Benz dealership for over 19 years (starting in 1988). The500E was an awesome car and fun to drive. The video says no Porsche parts, but I remember standing at the parts counter as they ordered transmission parts from Porsche for a 500E. My friend who still works there had one. He always floored it when we went to lunch. Good times.

I don't dispute its a great car, but really Mercedes fan boys.. You have to give credit where it's due, Porsche designed and engineered the engine and portions of the body, only Porsche and Audi has the most Le Mans wins, this engine won the PE Mans because it's a Porsche engineered engine not Mercedes. Between Merc, Audi and BMW.. Audi will forever have the better engines. Though this is an impeccable car but give credit where it's due honesty won't kill

I own a showroom 1990 300ce24V: a 3.0 litre six straight engine providing some lovely and smooth 232 HP with catalytic converter: it was around the time when in the US most of the V8 5 litres were giving some 140 HP at their best. Is that correct? All the stuff, accessories and amenities you are enthusiast about in this car, were standard in mine too. No miracle just for your 500E but "standard fitting" for any top of class models of the period.

Jason...why no love for the W124 M119 4.2L? Those cars didn't have the short gearing so they were capable of being faster, if not quicker. While I don't dare drive my 27 year old '94 E420 like you did the 500, it still delivers the goods. Two wishes: Mercedes-Benz would offer more support for the OBD I cars and a glove box. MBNA spun the barrel reducing the W124 price by $10K in 1993 to chase Lexus wisely. I doubt the accountants would let that kind of currency hedge happen today.
