América definitely is NOT a country and furthermore "American" is NOT a nationality or citizenship. I was born in the United States of América and anyone born or becomes a "natural" resident here, OFFICIALLY, are U.S. CITIZENS. North América & South América are collectively known as AMÉRICA, the American Continent(s). Anyone born on AMÉRICA is an American, even Canadians, jajaja. One thing I’d like to point out is that, after the “American” Revolution, people did want to change the name. It turns out “The United States of America” doesn’t roll off the tongue too easily. There were a couple options: - Columbia - Fredonia - No Change Nobody really *liked* the name “USA”. They thought about changing it to the obvious “Columbia”, but that didn’t really work because “Colombia” already existed in South America. So that was a no-go. Then they tried “Fredonia”. As a claim of “freedom”! But it also sounded kinda weird, and no one could really decide. Inevitably, the “American” Civil War happened, and the name “United States of America” suddenly held much more substantial meaning. It’s kind of cheesy but eh whatever. If we really wanna be accurate: The USA needs to be called “British America” Canada needs to be called “French America” Mexico needs to be called “Spanish America” And everything else needs to be called “French-British-Spanish-Portuguese-Japanese-Chinese America”

It’s actually sad that we can’t really identify as Americans to avoid confusion. I mean, people from Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Greece, etc, can all proudly say they are European. But in america (the continent) we can’t really say we are Americans, bc it sounds as if we were saying we were from the US. In Spanish we can say it, but it still sounds off.

Most people from the United States call what some call America. North and South America due to the Panama Canal. I don’t know what they if they called one half of the landmass different from the other before the canal. It is more of a language and cultural difference than the USA being wrong. The United States probably won’t care to change their name for a group of people most of which probably aren’t citizens and if they were they would almost certainly be in the minority. As well as the fact the US government and US people probably won’t manage to agree to change the name much less agree on a replacement for the country and the people. The people of the United States have been calling their country America since the Declaration of Independence. In my opinion instead of arguing over what we should all collectively call the continent, the country and what people from both of those places are called. Both sides neglecting that there are cultural and linguistic reasons some call the continent and country different things. I feel if we all just had a little understanding that some people from different cultures, opinions and parts of the world call things differently than what we may call them.

In Sweden we refer to the country in question as USA, (pronounced as the three letters, not as a word). I don't see any reason why that wouldn't also work in English. Isn't the country sometimes just referred to as "The US" even in English? Amerika (Swedish spelling of America) refers to either North America or North + South American. So there is still some ambiguity there.
